What paint correction is

Your clear coat is thin, and every wash, dry towel and brush leaves tiny marks in it. In sunlight those marks show up as swirls, haze and a dull finish. Paint correction is machine polishing that levels the clear coat just enough to take those marks out, so light reflects cleanly again.

It is done in stages. A light polish takes out haze and fine swirls. Heavier defects need a cutting step first and a finishing polish after. We use the lightest method that gets the result, because clear coat does not grow back.

Correction is usually the first step before a ceramic coating or paint protection film. Both seal in whatever is in the paint, so you want it clean first.

What correction fixes, and what it cannot

What it fixes

  • Swirl marks from washing and drying
  • Haze and dull, cloudy paint
  • Buffer trails and holograms from a past polish
  • Light scratches that have not gone through the clear coat
  • Light water spot etching

What it cannot fix

  • Scratches through the clear coat. If your fingernail catches, polishing will not remove it
  • Rock chips. Those need touch-up
  • Peeling or failing clear coat
  • Paint that has been polished too thin before

How much correction your paint needs

We tell you which one after we see the paint in good light.

1-step correction, from $600

For paint with light haze and fine swirls. One polishing step that brings back clarity and gloss.

2-step correction, from $900

For paint with heavy swirls and light scratches. A cutting step to remove the defects, then a finishing polish.

Included with a coating

Every ceramic coating package includes the paint prep: a full correction, or a paint enhancement on new vehicles.

How a correction job goes

  1. Inspect and measure

We look at every panel under strong light, mark the swirls, scratches and spots that need attention, and measure the paint thickness so we know how much clear coat there is to work with.

  2. Wash and decontaminate

The paint is washed and cleaned of bonded grime, so the polishing pad works on paint and not dirt.

  3. Test a section

A small area is polished first to find the lightest pad and polish that gets the result.

  4. Correct panel by panel

Each panel is polished and checked, then refined until it finishes clean.

  5. Protect it

Corrected paint is ready for a coating or film. Left bare, new swirls come back with the next bad wash.

From $600

1-step correction starts at $600 and 2-step at $900. Correction is already included in our ceramic coating packages.

  • Paint condition: how deep and how many the defects are
  • Vehicle size
  • 1-step or 2-step
  • Whether a coating or film goes on after

What the warranty covers

Will the swirls come back?

The defects that are removed are gone. New ones come from washing: dirty mitts, dry towels and automatic brush washes put swirls right back.

That is why correction and protection go together. A ceramic coating makes the paint slicker and easier to wash without marring, and film takes the hits on the front. Either way, wash gently and the finish stays.

Questions people ask

What is paint correction?

Machine polishing that removes swirls, haze and light scratches by leveling the clear coat. It brings back clarity and gloss.

Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating?

Usually some, yes. A coating seals in whatever is in the paint, and even new cars often have swirls from the lot.

Do I need paint correction before PPF?

The paint under film should be clean and as defect free as practical, because the film seals it in. We tell you what your paint needs.

How long does paint correction last?

The defects removed are gone for good. New swirls come from washing, so a coating or film and gentle washing keep the finish.

What is included in paint correction?

Inspection and a paint thickness reading, wash and decontamination, a test section, then polishing panel by panel until the paint finishes clean. We spell out the level in your quote.

Do you measure paint thickness?

Yes. We measure before we polish, so we know how much clear coat each panel has and never take off more than it can spare.

How much does paint correction cost?

1-step correction starts at $600 and 2-step at $900. Vehicle size and the paint set the final price. If you are getting a ceramic coating, correction is included in the package.

Bryant and crew did a great job on my 21 year old F150. It was very dirty and they brought it back to life. Great job.
