Boat ceramic coating vs PPF: which does your boat need?

Short answer: film takes the scuffs, fender rash and dock rub; a ceramic coating keeps the whole boat glossy and easy to wash down. Most boats do best with film on the high-wear spots and a coating over the rest.

The short answer

Boat paint protection film is a clear film you can feel. It is the only one of the two that stands up to physical wear: fenders, pilings, anchor chain, coolers and shoes. Boat ceramic coating is a thin liquid layer that cures hard. It keeps gelcoat glossy, makes salt and the scum line rinse off, and ends the waxing, but it will not stop a scuff.

One line to remember: film for wear, coating for upkeep. And both go on gelcoat that is in good shape, so faded or chalky hulls get sanded and buffed first, priced in addition.

Which one for your boat

Tied up at a busy dock

Film on the fender line and the bow, where pilings and fenders rub every time you come in.

Trailered and beached

Film on the bow, stem and keel area that take the bunks, sand and loading bumps.

Sits in the sun all season

A coating over polished gelcoat, so the shine holds and salt rinses off without waxing.

Hull already chalky

Sanding and buffing first, priced in addition. Neither film nor a coating should go over oxidation.

Want the most protection

Film the high-wear spots, then coat the rest of the boat and over the film.

Getting both

Film and a coating work well together, and the order matters. Faded gelcoat is sanded and buffed first. Film goes on the spots that take the abuse. Then the coating goes over the film and the rest of the hull and topsides.

The result: the fender line and bow are protected from rub, the whole boat stays glossy, and a washdown after a trip takes a fraction of the time. Ask for both in one quote and we price them together.

Living with each one in salt water

Both need a fresh water rinse after salt runs and a mild boat soap. With film, keep pressure washers and harsh solvents back from the edges. With a coating, skip abrasive pads and harsh cleaners, and do not wax over it.

Neither one is a reason to stop washing the boat. They make it faster.

Questions people ask

Which is better for a boat, ceramic coating or PPF?

Neither is better; they do different jobs. Film stops scuffs and rub in the spots it covers. A coating keeps the whole boat glossy and easy to wash down. Many boats get both.

Can you put a ceramic coating over boat PPF?

Yes. Film on the high-wear spots with a coating over the boat is a common combination.

Do I need both?

Not always. If the fender line and bow are what wear, start with film. If the whole boat fades and you are tired of waxing, a coating may do it.

What does each cost?

Hull film starts at $25 per square foot. Boat ceramic coating starts at $75 per foot for a hull-only package. Sanding and buffing are in addition.

Does the gelcoat need work first?

Yes, if it is dull or chalky. Film and coatings both seal in what is under them, so we sand and buff it first, priced in addition.

They did a great job on my boat I would definitely recommend. Sent a text message alert of the scheduled date, communicated through the process, and kept all their timelines and promises.
