What paint protection film is

PPF is a clear urethane film applied over the painted panels most likely to get hit. It is thick enough to take rock chips, sand and road debris that would otherwise chip the paint. Most modern films have a self-healing top layer: light swirls and scuffs in the film fade with heat from the sun or warm water.

It is a film, not a coating. People mix those up all the time. A ceramic coating is a thin liquid layer for gloss and easy washing. Film is a physical layer for impact. Many owners get both: film on the front, coating over the film and the rest of the car. See ceramic coating vs PPF.

We install CovrGard paint protection film, and we are CovrGard Certified Installers. Our film comes with a 10-year CovrGard warranty against cracking, bubbling and yellowing when it is registered within 7 days of install. See warranty.

Every film job is topped with a ceramic coating, priced in addition. The coating keeps the film slick, cleaner and easier to wash.

Film on cars is installed at our shop on US 80, where the light, dust and temperature are under control. Can’t bring it in? We pick it up and bring it back for a fee, and we are insured to transport it.

Film comes in five finishes: gloss, satin, matte, carbon fiber and black. Gloss is close to invisible; satin and matte change the look of the paint to a soft or flat finish. Edges are wrapped wherever the panel allows, so the film line hides behind the panel edge.

What film does, and what it does not

Film is the only thing on this site that stops a rock chip. It still has limits.

What it does

  • Stops rock chips and road rash on the panels it covers
  • Takes scuffs from keys, bags, rings and door edges
  • Light swirls in the film fade with heat on most modern films
  • Close to invisible on paint in good shape
  • Comes off later without hurting healthy factory paint

What it does not do

  • Protect panels it does not cover
  • Fix chips or scratches already in the paint. Correction or touch-up comes first
  • Replace washing. It still gets dirty
  • Stop a hard hit from denting the panel under it

How a film job goes

  1. Plan the coverage

We look at the paint and the way you drive, then agree on exactly which panels get film.

  2. Wash and decontaminate

The paint is washed and cleaned of bonded grime. Anything left on it ends up under the film.

  3. Correct the paint

Swirls and light scratches are polished out first, so the film seals in a clean finish.

  4. Fit the film

Film is cut to the panels and laid on with a slip solution, then squeegeed out and set. Edges are wrapped wherever the panel allows.

  5. Coat it

The film and the rest of the paint get a ceramic coating, so everything washes easier.

  6. Check and hand back

Edges are checked in good light. Most film jobs take 2 to 5 days. You get care instructions in person and by email, sample care products and your CovrGard warranty card.

Partial front film starts at $1,200 and full front at $2,200. Every film job is topped with a ceramic coating, priced in addition.

What sets the final price

  • Coverage: partial front, full front, track package or full body
  • Vehicle size and the shape of the panels
  • Paint condition, and any correction needed before film goes on

What the warranty covers

Living with film

Hand wash when you can. Touchless car washes are fine; brush washes can catch an edge. If you pressure wash, keep the tip back from the film’s edges.

Film can be coated. A ceramic coating over the film makes it slicker, keeps it cleaner and makes bugs and tar easier to remove.

Give new film a few days before the first wash, and do not worry about small water bubbles right after install. They usually work themselves out as the film settles. You get care instructions in person and by email.

Questions people ask

Is PPF worth it?

If you drive highway miles, have a new car or dark paint, or plan to keep the car, film is the only thing that stops chips. On an older car you are about to sell, probably not.

How much is PPF for the front of a car?

Partial front starts at $1,200 and full front at $2,200. Every film job is topped with a ceramic coating, priced in addition.

What does full front PPF cover?

Full bumper, full hood, full fenders, headlights and the backs of the mirrors.

How long does PPF last?

CovrGard, the film we install, comes with a 10-year warranty when registered within 7 days. How long film looks good depends on sun, care and miles.

Do I have to get a ceramic coating with PPF?

Yes. We top every film job with a ceramic coating, priced in addition. It keeps the film slicker, cleaner and easier to wash.

Can you install PPF at my house?

No. Film on cars is installed at our shop, where dust and light are under control. We offer pick-up and drop-off for a fee, and we are insured to transport your car.

Does PPF yellow?

Older and cheaper films could yellow, especially on white cars. Modern quality films are made to resist it, and CovrGard’s warranty covers discoloring from UV.

Does PPF peel at the edges?

Edges lift when film is overstretched, edges are not sealed, or the paint under it was not clean. We wrap edges wherever the panel allows, which hides the film line and keeps the edge down.

Does PPF come in matte or colors?

Yes. CovrGard film comes in gloss, satin, matte, carbon fiber and black. Satin or matte film changes a gloss car to a soft or flat finish and protects it at the same time.

Does PPF ruin paint when it is removed?

On healthy factory paint, quality film comes off cleanly with heat. Repainted panels or a failing clear coat can lift with it, which is why we check the paint first.

Can I go through a car wash with PPF?

Touchless washes are the safer choice. Brush washes can catch an edge and add scratches. Hand washing is best.

Is PPF a coating?

No. Paint protection film is a physical film. Ceramic coating is a liquid coating. They do different jobs and work well together.

Bryant and crew did a great job on my 21 year old F150. It was very dirty and they brought it back to life. Great job.
